India is considered one of the largest two-wheeler markets in the world and some manufacturers have been smart to enter the pre-owned two-wheeler segment to expand their customer base. While you get to choose everything from a humble commuter to litre-class exotica, we have listed out a few brands that have entered the used bike segment to claim their share of the pie. If you have planned your finances to buy your dream ride and want to go down the pre-owned big bike route, then you are on the right page.
Pre-owned Ducati bikes
Yes, much to the joy of all Ducati fans including my former colleague and Ducati fanboy Abhishek, the Italian marquee stepped into the pre-owned bike segment in India. It is the only premium bike manufacturer to test the waters in this segment. On the day they announced this (December 2018), and we kid you not, a pre-owned 2015 Ducati Diavel was on sale for Rs 5.88 lakh, on-road! And since it was a Ducati-approved pre-owned bike, it vanished from their website in the next few days. There are not many bikes though. Currently, there are five bikes on sale on their website and you can check out the same here and it is subject to change as time goes by. You have to be hawk-eyed and quick in action to get one in your garage, as they don’t stick around for too long waiting for you to make a decision. There’s always someone on the lookout for a sweet deal on a Ducati, isn’t there?
Vintage Royal Enfields, anyone?
Evoking nostalgia and playing it to its advantage has been Royal Enfield’s strong points. Aggressive marketing and churning out retro classic bikes with a touch of modern elements has swelled sales numbers and before you knew it, every Tom, Dick, and Harry was chugging around in a Royal Enfield. Now, with so much interest surrounding vintage motorcycles, RE has decided to enter the pre-owned bike segment by restoring old REs and subjecting these bikes to a 92-point checklist before selling them to the customers. Can you guess the name of its pre-owned chain of outlets? Yes, it’s called the ‘Vintage Store’ and the first of its kind was opened in Chennai.
The ‘Vintage Store’ aims to make the purchase of pre-owned and spruced-up Enfields hassle-free, including after-sales service, financing, insurance, warranty (definitive period not mentioned currently), and other documentation works. More of these outlets are expected to spring up in the country. Check it out if you are a classic/vintage motorcycle fan.
Honda’s Best Deal
HMSI has been smart when it comes to the pre-owned bike segment in the country. It has a presence in more than 200 cities in the country! One can buy, sell and exchange two-wheelers at any of its ‘Best Deal’ outlets. According to Honda, the shift from BS-III to BS-IV and demonetization gave a big boost to the pre-owned two-wheeler sales. Best Deal customers also get two free services, six months warranty along with genuine after-sales support. If you are not interested in Ducatis or REs, this is another option to make your urban commutes easier. Then there is Honda’s solid reliability to seal the deal.

You can also check out Droom – it is one of the largest online e-commerce companies in India and is the largest online auto marketplace for buying and selling new and used automobiles. Droom deals with four marketplace formats (B2C, C2C, C2B, and B2B). Droom has most of the premium bike brands in the country, so if you want a pre-owned superbike apart from Ducati, here’s where you should be looking. They have tie-ups with OEMs and dealers and that enables them to penetrate the market. You pay the token amount and once the loan process is through, delivery can be taken within a couple of days. Shipping, registration, and insurance are all part of the deal.
The bikes go through a 121-point technical checklist before being given the go. You also get complimentary roadside assistance for one year for any vehicle purchased via Droom. Unlike two-wheeler loans from banks and NBFCs, the rate of interest depends on the profile of the person rather than the bike – similar to a personal loan. CIBIL score is also not given that much importance as they use AI-based financial intelligence methods to evaluate the profile of their customer.
